Empowering the Western Balkans: DTM Training Enhances Migration Insights and Research Capabilities
Petrovac, - In a bid to bolster research and data capacity in the Western Balkans, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) conducted a three-day Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) training. The training, made possible with support from Utenriksdepartementet (Norge) and Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale, aimed to equip IOM - UN Migration and its partners in the region with the skills to securely store, collect, analyze data, and carry out research on migration.
The goal is to enhance understanding of migratory trends in the Western Balkans, enabling the provision of tailored, evidence-based assistance to mobile populations and supporting authorities in addressing the needs of vulnerable migrants.
The training also offered a unique opportunity for DTM focal points to prepare for an upcoming round of flow monitoring surveys (FMS), one of the most extensive data collection efforts in the Western Balkans.
By the conclusion of the training, participants were well-prepared to plan, manage, and execute ethically sound and high-quality research projects, covering everything from setting research objectives to the publication and dissemination stage.
They gained proficiency in distinguishing between various research types, selecting appropriate methodologies, and effectively utilizing them. Additionally, they learned how to design data collection surveys, perform data cleaning, analysis, and visualization, reinforcing the region's capabilities to address the evolving challenges of migration effectively.
