A Community's Embrace: Mayder’s Journey of Hope
When Mayder Noriega arrived in Montenegro two years ago, he was seeking to escape the painful memories of losing his daughter in Cuba. Little did he know that the Montenegrin community would become his source of strength and hope, exemplifying the profound impact of social cohesion and the power of a welcoming community.
Initially, life in Montenegro was challenging for Mayder. After his visa expired, he found himself in a precarious situation without legal stay. Yet, the Montenegrin people rallied around him, providing him with a modest place to live in Podgorica and enough food to survive. Despite these hardships, he persevered, uplifted by the kindness of those around him.
Mayder's story highlights how local communities can play a pivotal role in supporting migrants during their most difficult times. The absence of a clear path forward weighed heavily on Mayder, but the compassion he experienced in Montenegro kept his spirit alive. His fortunes began to change when he learned about the Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintagration (AVRR) program from the same individuals who had been supporting him. Eager to return to Cuba and start anew, he reached out for assistance.
After a thorough consultation, Mayder was thrilled to discover that he could return to Cuba with dignity and hope. "They gave me hope for a better tomorrow, and for that, I will be forever grateful", he shared.
Mayder also expressed deep appreciation for his Montenegrin friends, who stood by him during his toughest times. "They shared their food with me, and I had what they had. I am in love with this country and feel blessed to have met so many good-hearted people with only the best intentions."
With a heart full of gratitude and a spirit renewed, Mayder returns to Cuba with a smile. His journey, though fraught with difficulties, ultimately led to salvation and a chance to rebuild his life. "Thank you for everything, I will never forget this" he said, as he prepared to embark on the next chapter of his life.
Mayder’s story is a powerful reminder of the positive impact that compassion and support can have on someone's life. Those who supported him are proud to have been a part of his journey and wish him all the best as he returns home.
Mayder’s safe return was made possible thanks to the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway.
