IOM Montenegro, United Nation Migration Agency Supports 2024 Diaspora-Expatriates Days in Podgorica

 

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), United Nation Migration Agency, within the project “Diaspora engagement for sustainable development of Montenegro - phase II” funded by IOM Development Fund, contributed this year’s Diaspora-Expatriates Days, organized by the newly established Ministry of Diaspora for Montenegro and Municipality of Podgorica. This is annual event, which rotates among different municipalities in Montenegro, brought together Montenegrin diaspora, expatriates and local communities through a business forum, series of conferences, travel tours, sports events and numerous networking opportunities.

On July 25th, the conference "Contributions of Montenegrin Women in the Diaspora - Looking Beyond Borders and Promoting Gender Equality" at Vila Gorica was held. The conference was a resounding success, assembling prominent women from the Montenegrin diaspora, alongside distinguished international experts, activists, and diaspora members. Discussions focused on the significant contributions of Montenegrin women abroad and their important role in promoting gender equality and inclusive development.

The following day, a Business Forum was hosted featuring two insightful panel discussions: "The Influence of the Diaspora on the Economic Development of Montenegro" and "Montenegro as a Movie Destination." These sessions gathered government officials, private sector representatives, and international experts, fostering robust discussions on how to maximize Montenegro's potential with the support of its diaspora.

Mr. Vladimir Gjorgjiev, IOM Montenegro Chief of Mission and a.i UN Resident Coordinator, addressed the forum, highlighting the positive aspects of migration and valuable role of the diaspora as a bridge between cultures and societies. "With over 70 years of experience and development, IOM recognizes the immense potential and contributions that diaspora communities are making both in their country of origin, but also in the destination/ host countries. The diaspora brings unique perspectives and experiences that drive economic growth and social progress in both host and home countries," Gjorgjiev stated. He reaffirmed IOM's commitment to supporting the Government of Montenegro in harnessing the full potential of its diaspora for sustainable development.

The two-day event concluded with a vibrant cultural program at Independence Square in Podgorica. The Minister of Diaspora, Mr. Mirsad Azemović, together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Ervin Ibrahimovic opened the event, underscoring the immense value of Montenegrin expatriates. Minister Azemović emphasized that the diaspora’s contributions extend beyond economic benefits to include academic, cultural, social, and political impacts. Azemović announced that the Ministry of Diaspora will continue to strengthen ties with the diaspora and support their initiatives.
