International Day of Family Remittances
On June 16, the International Day of Family Remittances is celebrated worldwide, as established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018.
IOM Montenegro honors all migrant workers for their commitment to supporting their families and Montenegrin society at large through remittances. Remittances are a vital connection between migration and development, benefiting countries of origin, destination, and the migrants themselves. Maximizing their potential is crucial.
Having in mind Montenegrin migrants working abroad, IOM Montenegro Chief of Mission, Vladimir Gjorgjiev emphasizes the importance of an inclusive approach to build capacity around remittances and utilize potential human capital that migrants can bring, which is essential to harness future development opportunities and positively contribute to building better society.
IOM Montenegro is implementing project funded by IOM Development Fund "Diaspora Engagement for Sustainable Development of Montenegro - phase II", which is a significant way forward for creating future actions to bring successful global practices in remittance flows to Montenegro.
Currently, through a twofold approach the project is providing support to the Government of Montenegro in setting the strategic framework for future diaspora engagement and implementing direct activities to enhance collaboration with expatriates.
IOM Montenegro remains dedicated to contributing with these initiatives to Sustainable Development Goal 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth.
