IOM Montenegro Combatting Trafficking in Human Beings in Digital Space

Podgorica - OM Montenegro organized workshop to validate the analysis, developed by IOM engaged consultant, on Montenegrin legislative framework against applicable EU and international standards regulating the online and technology-facilitated trafficking in human beings. 

The validation workshop was attended by all relevant stakeholders engaged in the area of combating trafficking in human beings who also participated in the development/interview phase. 

Rise of technological developments and use of different social media platforms has shifted the focus of facilitation of trafficking in human beings to online space. Assessing the national legislative framework regulating online and technology facilitated trafficking in human beings marks a first step in what needs to become a strong response to this ever-evolving problem. 

All actors involved in the process of analysis development agreed that facilitation of recruitment of victims of trafficking in human beings though online platforms is expected to become even more pronounced and lucrative in the coming years and thus requires proactive response. 

Next steps: IOM Montenegro aims conduct two capacity building activities for relevant stakeholders addressing combatting trafficking in human beings in digital space.
