Šaranović - Gjorgjiev: Stronger Collaboration in the Field of Migration
Minister of Internal Affairs, Danilo Saranovic, met with Vladimir Gjorgjiev, the Chief of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Montenegro, underlining their commitment to bolster collaboration. The focal point of their discussion centered around collaborative initiatives aimed at enhancing capacities and formulating institutional and legislative frameworks within the realms of asylum, migration, and visa regulations.
"Our stronger collaboration is of vital importance as the borders of Montenegro will be the borders of the European Union. It is crucial for us to be a credible partner in fostering regional cooperation in combating illegal migration, organized, and cross-border crime, directly contributing to a higher level of security in the Western Balkans region and beyond," Minister Saranović stated.
He highlighted ongoing efforts within the country to expand reception facilities and reinforce capabilities for integrated border management. Minister Saranović placed particular emphasis on the significance of the 'Individual Measure to Strengthen Integrated Border Management Capacities' project. Securing 15 million euros in funding from the European Union, the project, implemented by IOM, aims to introduce an electronic identification and registration system for migrants.
"Our previous collaboration has been very successful in numerous areas, and I am confident that it will continue with even greater intensity. We are here to support the Government of Montenegro in its vision of sustainable development and accelerated European integration. Progress is visible, and we are ready to strengthen police capacities together to combat illegal migration and suppress criminal activities," said IOM Mission Chief Vladimir Gjorgjiev.
